In the 1960s, two local historians, together with the Owasco chapter D.A.R. and members of the local Pomona Grange Chapter, compiled a partial countywide roster of cemetery burials within Cayuga County.
The resulting 10-volumes of cemetery burial roster books generally cite the name and date (or year) of death as referenced in either cemetery records or (more commonly) as transcribed from cemetery gravestones.
Copies of these cemetery index volumes are available for research in the Local History Discovery Center at Seymour Public Library, The Cayuga County Historian’s Office and Luther Research Center at the Cayuga-Owasco Lakes Historical Society and Onondaga County Public Library. A complete set was also placed in the Cayuga County Clerk’s Office. The copies of each volume as contained in the Seymour library, County Historian’s Office, and the Luther Research Center contain individual surname indexes.
Some of the list of burials for cemeteries, contained within the 1960s countywide cemetery burial inventory, were apparently copied from an earlier inventory of cemetery burials compiled by Frank A. & Clara Skilton. Mr. Skilton was an attorney & businessman who devoted the last 30 years of his life to conducting historical and genealogical research. Mr. Skilton died on 6 January 1931 and some of his historical research records and those of his wife, Clara Maria Gilbert Skilton, included tombstone inscriptions from graves in more than eighty Cayuga County cemeteries.
