The Cold Spring Cemetery Located on State Street in Auburn was renovated by the volunteer activities of Chris Cuddy and Pat O’Connor in the 1980s and 1990s.
It was also known as “The Catholic Cemetery” and “State Street Cemetery.”
The cemetery was the first primarily Catholic Cemetery in the City of Auburn. The land was originally purchased by Bishop John Timon in 1854. Bishop Timon was then the Bishop of Buffalo. Because the terrain and soil type proved to be less than ideal for cemetery purposes, a new catholic cemetery for the Auburn area was established in 1880 with the purchase of St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The Cold Spring-(Old Catholic) Cemetery on State Street in Auburn, NY was targeted as a “Cayuga County Bicentennial Beautification Project Site” during the County’s Bicentennial in 1999.
This cemetery contains the burials of many early Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans. A Historical Marker to honor this landmark was dedicated during a ceremony at the cemetery on July 8th, 2000. The dedication ceremony was coordinated by the Auburn A.O.H (Hibernians) Chapter.
There is a headstone of a young one year old girl, Nellie Farrell, which had never been included in any inventory of the cemetery. Pat O’Connor has been finding several pieces of head stones that were scattered in the ditch along the north boundary of the cemetery. Within about a 40′ stretch of the ditch he found the 13 broken pieces of Nellie’s headstone that he was able to put together like a jigsaw puzzle. This is only a small example of several headstones that they have saved from oblivion.

Burial Listings, 1964
Records first compiled by Mabel Crosby and Flora Daniels, 1964. Mabel Crosby added this note: “Because of rampant poison ivy, we were unable to get the ground level line of inscription on some stones, which contained reference to the county in Ireland where person came from.”

Burial Listings, 1984
A Re-Inventory of Headstone Information in the State Street Cemetery (also known as Cold Spring Cemetery, Auburn, New York, dated May 1984. Thanks to Linda Jasztal for transcribing the information created by Raymond Keefe. The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Raymond E. Keefe, Fairport, New York, dated in 1984:
“My purpose in re-inventorying the cemetery needs explanation. The Crosby/Daniels inventory dated 1964 served very adequately as the only record of the souls buried there.
The original records were burned in a fire at Holy Family Rectory. We are much in debt to Mable Crosby and Flora Daniells for their work. I can testify to the difficulty of the effort required. No doubt the cemetery grounds were a physical challenge then. Today it is impossible. I needed help turning over larger headstones, lifting up trees to read stones, etc. Now thick brush covers two-thirds of the portion of the grounds containing the headstones which are engulfed once the limbs blossom. The remainder of the cemetery grounds, except for the very front part, are only in slightly better condition. My purposes are: 1-To supplement, not duplicate the C/D inventory; 2-Especially seek out and record information on headstones relative to the place of Nativity; 3-To record information from stones that were buried, under fallen trees, or turned facedown, and 4- To locate the stones within the cemetery by some mapping method, if only approximate.
Let me briefly explain the system I used in inventorying: I applied a numbering system to the existing Crosby/Daniells inventory. The 1st # is the page number, the 2nd # identifies surname and changes with each name, and the last # is successive within the surname. Example-using the name “John O’Keefe” – found on page 9, it is the 9th surname on page, and the 1st person with that surname. (9.9.1)
I have never undertaken a cemetery inventory project and did not seek out expert advice before starting; nonetheless, I attempted to do a thorough and complete job, but a job I would have never started if had not Crosby and Daniells done the pioneering work”.
Ray Keefe

| 543 | Mc Garr | Mary | Native of Parish of Baltinglass, Co. Kildare, Ireland | 3-01-1866 | in the 97″ | SW | On Ground Broken. Additional Information received from Evelyn J. Twining: “I believe the above Mary Mc Garr was the Mary (surname not given), d/o William Hayden and Honora Kavanagh, who died March 1, 1866 (Holy Family Death Records). I believe she was the mother of Eliza Kelly (on page 30 of Mc Garr family history), daughter of Michael Mc Garr and Mary Haydon (sic), who was buried 12-22-1869 in her 65th year (Holy Family Death Records). In other words, I think the Mary Mc Garr who died 3-01-1866, was the widow of Michael Mc Garr and was the d/o William Hayden and Hanora Kavanagh. This letter from Evelyn was dated 5-09-1980. Also, on Mary’s stone: native of Ballyrag— (or Ballyray—). The stone was crackedacross the middle; it probably read “in the 97th year of her age” I couldn’t read the two-line epitaph at the bottom. | ||
